The concert themed “Blossoms of Suzhou Age” was held at Suzhou Jinji Lake Concert Hall, SIP on the evening of May 18, when Suzhou Symphony Orchestra (SZS) shared the stage with four artists to offer the audience a music feast blending traditional and modern Chinese and Western musical elements.
Zhu Qiyuan, a famous conductor, led the performance, which included six original compositions featuring ingeniously fused classical and contemporary styles to manifest the historical culture, natural landscape and the spirit of the times in Suzhou and even the broader Jiangnan region from diverse perspectives.
Xu Yun, a Kunqu opera (one of the oldest forms of Chinese opera) performer, Shen Tong, an erhu (a bowed two-stringed traditional Chinese instrument) performer, Xie Lan, a pingtan (storytelling and ballad singing in Suzhou dialect) performer, and Chen Li, a violist, showcased extraordinary artistic attainments.
A seminar was held after the show. Several experts gave suggestions on improvement of the project.
The concert will be staged in Shanghai and other cities later.
